The\u00a0Electric Light Orchestra<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(<\/a>ELO<\/a><\/strong>)<\/a> are an English\u00a0rock<\/a>\u00a0band formed in\u00a0Birmingham<\/a>\u00a0in 1970, by songwriters\/multi-instrumentalists\u00a0Jeff Lynne<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0Roy Wood<\/a>\u00a0with drummer\u00a0Bev Bevan<\/a>. Their music is characterised by a fusion of\u00a0Beatlesque<\/a>\u00a0pop<\/a>,\u00a0classical<\/a>\u00a0arrangements<\/a>, and\u00a0futuristic iconography<\/a>.[<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0After Wood’s departure in 1972, Lynne became the band’s leader, arranging and producing every album while writing virtually all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan and keyboardist\u00a0Richard Tandy<\/a>\u00a0were the group’s only consistent members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n ELO was formed out of Lynne’s and Wood’s desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones. It derived as an offshoot of Wood’s previous band, The Move<\/a>, of which Lynne and Bevan were also members. During the 1970s and 1980s, ELO released a string of top 10 albums and singles, including two LPs that reached the top of British charts: the disco<\/a>-inspired Discovery<\/a><\/em> (1979) and the science-fiction<\/a>-themed concept album<\/a> Time<\/a><\/em>(1981). In 1986, Lynne lost interest in the band and ceased its operation. Bevan responded by forming his own band, ELO Part II<\/a>, which later became the Orchestra<\/a>. With the exception of a short-lived reunion in 2000\u201301, ELO remained largely inactive until the 2010s. In 2014, Lynne re-formed the band again with Tandy as Jeff Lynne’s ELO<\/strong>, where he resumed concert touring and new recordings under the moniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n During ELO’s original 14-year period of active recording and touring, they sold over 50 million records worldwide,\u00a0collecting 19\u00a0CRIA<\/a>, 21\u00a0RIAA<\/a>, and 38\u00a0BPI<\/a>\u00a0awards.\u00a0For a period in the mid 1970s, the band saw more success in the United States, where they were billed as “the English guys with the big fiddles”.\u00a0From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated twenty Top 20 songs on the\u00a0UK Singles Chart<\/a>, and fifteen Top 20 songs on the US\u00a0Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100<\/a>.
