{"id":494,"date":"2019-02-20T14:57:03","date_gmt":"2019-02-20T22:57:03","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.ronrecord.com\/?page_id=494"},"modified":"2019-02-21T10:38:54","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T18:38:54","slug":"elo","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/blog.ronrecord.com\/index.php\/elo\/","title":{"rendered":"Electric Light Orchestra"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>My &#8220;Electric Light Orchestra&#8221; YouTube playlist. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\u00a0<strong><a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Light_Orchestra\">Electric Light Orchestra<\/a><\/strong><a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Light_Orchestra\">\u00a0(<\/a><strong><a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Light_Orchestra\">ELO<\/a><\/strong><a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Light_Orchestra\">)<\/a> are an English\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rock_music\">rock<\/a>\u00a0band formed in\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Birmingham\">Birmingham<\/a>\u00a0in 1970, by songwriters\/multi-instrumentalists\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeff_Lynne\">Jeff Lynne<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Roy_Wood\">Roy Wood<\/a>\u00a0with drummer\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bev_Bevan\">Bev Bevan<\/a>. Their music is characterised by a fusion of\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beatlesque\">Beatlesque<\/a>\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pop_music\">pop<\/a>,\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Classical_music\">classical<\/a>\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arrangement\">arrangements<\/a>, and\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Future#Science_fiction\">futuristic iconography<\/a>.<sup><a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electric_Light_Orchestra#cite_note-AllMusicBio-5\">[<\/a><\/sup>\u00a0After Wood&#8217;s departure in 1972, Lynne became the band&#8217;s leader, arranging and producing every album while writing virtually all of their original material. For their initial tenure, Lynne, Bevan and keyboardist\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Richard_Tandy\">Richard Tandy<\/a>\u00a0were the group&#8217;s only consistent members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>ELO was formed out of Lynne&#8217;s and Wood&#8217;s desire to create modern rock and pop songs with classical overtones. It derived as an offshoot of Wood&#8217;s previous band,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Move\">The Move<\/a>, of which Lynne and Bevan were also members. During the 1970s and 1980s, ELO released a string of top 10 albums and singles, including two LPs that reached the top of British charts: the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Disco\">disco<\/a>-inspired&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Discovery_(Electric_Light_Orchestra_album)\">Discovery<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;(1979) and the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Science-fiction\">science-fiction<\/a>-themed&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concept_album\">concept album<\/a>&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Time_(Electric_Light_Orchestra_album)\">Time<\/a><\/em>(1981). In 1986, Lynne lost interest in the band and ceased its operation. Bevan responded by forming his own band,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/ELO_Part_II\">ELO Part II<\/a>, which later became&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Orchestra_(band)\">the Orchestra<\/a>. With the exception of a short-lived reunion in 2000\u201301, ELO remained largely inactive until the 2010s. In 2014, Lynne re-formed the band again with Tandy as&nbsp;<strong>Jeff Lynne&#8217;s ELO<\/strong>, where he resumed concert touring and new recordings under the moniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During ELO&#8217;s original 14-year period of active recording and touring, they sold over 50 million records worldwide,\u00a0collecting 19\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canadian_Recording_Industry_Association\">CRIA<\/a>, 21\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Recording_Industry_Association_of_America\">RIAA<\/a>, and 38\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Phonographic_Industry\">BPI<\/a>\u00a0awards.\u00a0For a period in the mid 1970s, the band saw more success in the United States, where they were billed as &#8220;the English guys with the big fiddles&#8221;.\u00a0From 1972 to 1986, ELO accumulated twenty Top 20 songs on the\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UK_Singles_Chart\">UK Singles Chart<\/a>, and fifteen Top 20 songs on the US\u00a0<a data-external=\"true\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billboard_Hot_100\"><em>Billboard<\/em>\u00a0Hot 100<\/a>.
