He rose to fame in the early 1990s with his&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Experimental_music\">experimental<\/a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lo-fi_music\">lo-fi<\/a>&nbsp;style, and became known for creating musical&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collage\">collages<\/a>&nbsp;of wide genre styles. Today, he musically encompasses&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Folk_music\">folk<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Funk\">funk<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Soul_music\">soul<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hip_hop_music\">hip hop<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Electronic_music\">electronic<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alternative_rock\">alternative rock<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Country_music\">country<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Psychedelic_music\">psychedelia<\/a>. He has released 13 studio albums (3 of which were independently released), as well as several non-album singles and a book of sheet music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Born in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles\">Los Angeles<\/a>&nbsp;in 1970, Beck grew towards hip-hop and folk in his teens and began to perform locally at coffeehouses and clubs. He moved to&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_City\">New York City<\/a>&nbsp;in 1989 and became involved in the city&#8217;s small and fiery&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anti-folk\">anti-folk<\/a>&nbsp;movement. Returning to Los Angeles in the early 1990s, he cut his breakthrough single &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Loser_(Beck_song)\">Loser<\/a>,&#8221; which became a worldwide hit in 1994, and released his first major album,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mellow_Gold\">Mellow Gold<\/a><\/em>, the same year.&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Odelay\">Odelay<\/a><\/em>, released in 1996, topped critic polls and won several awards. He released the psychedelic&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mutations_(Beck_album)\">Mutations<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 1998, and the funk-infused&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Midnite_Vultures\">Midnite Vultures<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 1999. The soft-acoustic&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sea_Change_(album)\">Sea Change<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 2002 showcased a more serious Beck, and 2005&#8217;s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guero\">Guero<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;returned to&nbsp;<em>Odelay<\/em>&#8216;s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sample_(music)\">sample<\/a>-based production.&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Information\">The Information<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;in 2006 was inspired by electro-funk, hip hop, and psychedelia; 2008&#8217;s&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modern_Guilt\">Modern Guilt<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;was inspired by &#8217;60s pop music; and 2014&#8217;s folk-infused&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Morning_Phase\">Morning Phase<\/a><\/em>&nbsp;won&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grammy_Award_for_Album_of_the_Year\">Album of the Year<\/a>&nbsp;at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/57th_Grammy_Awards\">57th Grammy Awards<\/a>&nbsp;on February 8, 2015. His thirteenth studio album,&nbsp;<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colors_(Beck_album)\">Colors<\/a><\/em>, was released in October 2017 after a long production process, and won awards for Best Alternative Album and Best Engineered Album at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/61st_Annual_Grammy_Awards\">61st Annual Grammy Awards<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pop_art\">pop art<\/a>&nbsp;collage of musical styles, oblique and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Irony\">ironic<\/a>&nbsp;lyrics, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Postmodern\">postmodern<\/a>&nbsp;arrangements incorporating&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sample_(music)\">samples<\/a>,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Drum_machine\">drum machines<\/a>, live instrumentation and sound effects, Beck has been hailed by critics and the public throughout his musical career as being among the most idiosyncratically creative musicians of 1990s and 2000s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alternative_rock\">alternative rock<\/a>.
